September Awareness Month: Spotlight on Safety, Health, and Cultur
There are a number of opportunities in September to recognize and participate in raising awareness for important safety, health, and social topics. From preparing for emergencies to ways to help those in recovery, September is a month that promotes awareness opportunities to make a positive impact in our daily lives. Some of these include National Preparedness Month, emphasizing the importance of having an emergency plan, National Recovery Month, promoting awareness for mental health and addiction recovery, and National Hispanic Heritage Month, which celebrates the positive societal contributions made by Hispanic Americans. September is also the month to observe National Library Card Sign-Up Month, National Pain Awareness Month, National Suicide Prevention Month, National Childhood Obesity Awareness Month, and Hunger Action Month. Each of these observances encourages education, prevention, and compassionate action to create safer, healthier, and more informed communities.

National Recovery Month started in 1989. It promotes awareness for treatment practices for mental health and addiction recovery, recognizes the providers and communities who support those seeking recovery, and celebrates those who have made progress in their recovery journey. In the U.S., 7 in 10 adults who have experienced mental health or substance use issues are in recovery, so everyone likely knows someone personally who has been or is seeking recovery. Check the SAMHSA website to learn ways to observe National Recovery Month and find tools to help someone you may know who may be seeking help with their in their recovery.
National Hispanic Heritage Month starts on September 15th and lasts through October 15th. It began as a week-long celebration in 1968 and became a month-long celebration in 1988. There is a time to recognize and pay tribute to the Hispanic Americans who have made a positive impact on our nation and society. From artists and musicians to veterans and educational professionals, many Hispanic Americans have made significant contributions to society. Be sure to check local websites in the area to learn about activities planned to celebrate Hispanic Heritage Month.
