November Awareness Month: Spotlight on Military, Health, and Food

Picture
There are a number of opportunities in November to recognize and participate in raising awareness and inspire action for important health and social topics, as well as fun awareness topics for everyone to enjoy. From recognizing military families who make their own sacrifices to learning how the debilitating disease such as Alzheimer’s is affecting a larger population, November is a month that promotes awareness opportunities to make a positive impact in our daily lives. Some of these include Military Family Appreciation Month and National Alzheimer’s Awareness Month. November is also the month to observe Lung Cancer Awareness, Movember, and Eye Donor Awareness. Each of these observances encourages education, prevention, and compassionate action to create safer, healthier, and more informed communities. There’s also time for personal favorites such as National Peanut Butter Lovers Month and Banana Pudding Lovers Month.

Military Family Appreciation Month

Picture
This is the month in which military families are recognized for their support for the ones in their families who serve. This is different than Military Appreciation Month in May, recognizing all branches of the military. First established in 1993 by the Armed Services YMCA, November is strictly dedicated to honoring the families who also made sacrifices, commitments, and contributions to support loved ones serving in the military. Military families are the backbone of the military. Family members understand the sacrifices made to serve the country, stand by loved ones during long trainings and deployments. Many businesses offer discounts to family members during November. If you know someone who has a relative in the military, make sure to thank them for their own sacrifices and commitment. Check out some of the businesses offering discounts to family members during November at this link.

National Alzheimer’s Awareness Month

National Alzheimer’s Awareness Month sheds light on the more than 6.2 million Americans living with this condition, which affects memory and cognitive function over time. Awareness during the month of November was started by President Ronald Reagan in 1983. At the time, fewer than 2 million Americans were diagnosed with the disease. The number of Americans with Alzheimer’s is projected to grow to 13.8 million by the year 2060. The National Alzheimer’s Project Act was passed by Congress in 2011 with a goal to prevent and treat Alzheimer’s by 2025, enhance care quality, and boost public awareness. Learn more on the Alzheimer’s Foundation of America website.

There are many options to how you may enjoy eating some good ‘ole peanut butter but this is the month to enjoy it to the fullest! Peanut butter is believed to have its origins from an American chemist by the name of Edson who wanted to develop a way for people with a difficult time chewing hard food could get the nutrition they needed. In 1884, peanut butter was born! Take some time this month to explore a new recipe, make some snacks for a friend, or have some family time around making several favorite peanut butter snacks.
