July Awareness Month: Spotlight on Health, Safety, and Equity

July is a powerful month for raising awareness and inspiring action across a range of important health and social issues. From protecting our bodies to caring for our communities, July is recognized for several key national awareness campaigns. These include UV Safety Awareness Month, which reminds us to protect our skin and eyes from harmful ultraviolet rays; Minority Mental Health Awareness Month, which shines a light on the mental health challenges and disparities faced by BIPOC communities; and Cord Blood Awareness Month, which educates families about the lifesaving potential of umbilical cord blood. July also celebrates Purposeful Parenting Month, Make a Difference to Children Month, and Group B Strep Awareness Month. Each of these observances encourages education, prevention, and compassionate action to create safer, healthier, and more informed communities.

July is UV Safety Awareness Month, a time to highlight the importance of protecting our skin and eyes from the harmful effects of ultraviolet (UV) rays. With longer days and more time spent outdoors, it’s crucial to take simple precautions to reduce the risk of skin cancer, sunburn, and eye damage. Observing UV Safety Awareness Month means wearing broad-spectrum sunscreen with SPF 30 or higher, seeking shade during peak sun hours (10 AM to 4 PM), wearing protective clothing and sunglasses, and avoiding tanning beds. It’s also a great time to schedule a skin check with a healthcare provider. By staying informed and taking preventive steps, we can enjoy the sun safely and reduce long-term health risks.

July is Minority Mental Health Awareness Month, dedicated to raising awareness about the unique mental health challenges and disparities faced by racial and ethnic minority communities. Originally established in honor of author and advocate Bebe Moore Campbell, this month highlights the importance of culturally competent care, reducing stigma, and improving access to mental health services for underserved populations. Observing this month means learning about the barriers to care, supporting organizations working toward mental health equity, and listening to and uplifting the voices of those with lived experience. Together, we can promote understanding, advocate for systemic change, and ensure that mental health care is inclusive and accessible to all.
