August Awareness Month: Spotlight on Health, Safety, and Equity

August is a month with many opportunities to raise awareness and inspire action across a range of important social, health, and safety topics. From staying safe on the roadways to approaching wellness holistically, August includes several key national awareness campaigns. These include National Traffic Awareness Month, which reminds us the importance of safe driving; National Immunization Awareness Month, which emphasizes awareness of getting vaccinations, and National Black Business Month, which educates families about the lifesaving potential of umbilical cord blood. August also celebrates National Wellness Month, National Civility Month, National Dog Month, and World Cancer Support Month. Each of these observances encourages education, prevention, and compassionate action to create safer, healthier, and more informed communities.

Approximately 10 percent of businesses and 30 percent of minority-owned businesses in the United States are run by black business owners, according to the U.S. Census Bureau. The National Traffic Awareness Month was created to promote road safety and prevent traffic accidents. It shines a light on rules and laws that are in place to help prevent accidents. There are many causes of traffic accidents ranging from distracted driving to a lack of understanding of traffic laws. Road rage and aggressive driving have been increasing as contributing factors to accidents. Take some time this month to get a refresher on local safety rules and regulations and ways to avoid habits that can lead to accidents. Check the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration website to learn more.
